Hmong
Courtship & Weddings
The
tensions and creative energies unleashed by moving to a new land are
evident in the area of courtship and weddings. Some Hmong wish to
preserve the older ways of the ball toss, “bride capture,” dowries, and
family negotiations; others wish to modify these traditions (or abandon
them entirely) by adopting marriage customs similar of the dominant
culture, including dating or marrying outside the traditional rituals
and rules.
