DOMESTIC VIOLENCE
As with other segments of American
society, Hmong-American communities and households
struggle with domestic violence. While
under-researched and likely especially under-reported by American women
of Asian or Pacific Islander (API) descent, the reported rate is lower
than for other racial and ethnic groups: a 1995-1996 phone survey found
12.8% of API women reported being physically assaulted by an intimate
partner during their lifetime, while the rates for Whites (21.3%),
African-Americans (26.3%), Native American (30.7%), and those of mixed
race backgrounds (27.0%) was considerably higher. Data are not available
for Hmong-American women specifically.
Here we provide information about incidents and rates of domestic
violence among those of API descent and Hmong-Americans, communities'
responses to it, and services available to individuals and communities
who are dealing with domestic violence.
