Story telling exists in every culture. For the Hmong, where formal written language was not developed until the 20th century, oral tradition became the primary means to transmit history, ritual and folklore up to the present day. Hmong folklore served another important purpose for those escaping violence in Laos in the 1970s: parents and grandparents used stories as a way to preserve meaning, entertain, and calm children from the stress of distant gunshots.
