Music and Dance
Traditional
Hmong music and dance have an important place in the sacred rituals of
life and death. Traditional music serves as a means for remembering and
transmitting folklore and historical events. Traditional dance is also
associated with meaningful events and is an important expression of
cultural identity. Younger Hmong Americans have gravitated to new forms
of music and dance, including hip-hop, pop music, and break dancing.
This segment introduces both traditional and contemporary Hmong music
and dance through recordings and video, highlighting instruments,
lyrics, sounds, and movement.
