Deliberative Forum Team -Teaching

During AY 2009-2010, WIPPS established an on-going collaborative relationship with regular education middle and high school teachers in the Athens School District, and with at-risk education teachers at the middle and high school levels in the Wausau School District. Outreach efforts involved the incorporation of a deliberation class into regular education and at-risk programs at the middle and high school levels. With the support of the Kettering Foundation, the result was the implementation of a pilot research project entitled “Impact of Deliberation in the Secondary School Setting.”

Preparatory activities included a one day moderator training workshop, provided by WIPPS staff, for teachers involved in the pilot project, AmeriCorps volunteers, teacher aides, a public school counselor, and leadership program staff from the Camp Manito-wish Y.M.C.A.

In December, 2010, WIPPS staff initiated a team-teaching/consulting relationship with faculty from the Wausau Engineering and Global Leadership Academy (EGLA), a public charter school within the Wausau School District, that emphasizes science, math, engineering, technology and collaborative leadership skills. Activities planned for Fall 2011 involved EGLA and WIPPS staff moderating national issues forums and helping staff and students name and frame charter school self-governance issues.
