Dead Man Walking National Project
As part of the Dead Man Walking national project, the Wisconsin Institute for Public Policy and Service sponsored performances of the play, produced by the UWMC Theatre Department and based on Helen Prejean’s book and subsequent movie of the same title, at UW-Marathon County and UW-Fox Valley. The project offered a unique public education and outreach component. Recognizing the controversy surrounding the death penalty in Wisconsin, along with the need for civil public discussion, each performance was followed by a public “talk back” session led by different community leaders, including UW Colleges faculty, local judges and attorneys, and by the national coordinator of the project, Maureen Fenlon. Students on both campuses also engaged in collaborative research projects based on the issue, and the campus held a public discussion on the death penalty.
