2nd Annual Great Northwoods Service Learning Conference
Held May 2, 2009 at the Westwood Conference Center in Wausau, this workshop drew 27 attendees from ten UW Colleges, fulfilling one component of the WIPPS mission: providing a "hub" for service learning activities colleges-wide. Keynotes by Pam Proulx-Curry, Executive Director of Wisconsin Campus Compact, and Randy Stoecker, Professor of Rural Sociology at UW-Madison, addressed such issues as definition, design and implementation of service learning projects, and maintaining effective community relationships for maximum ongoing civic engagement of participating students. Workshop participants brainstormed ideas for sustainable service learning practices that might become the basis for a UWC Service Learning strategy. Plans were also made to make this a yearly conference, to add UW-Extension as a collaborator, and to look into holding it in conjunction with the UW Colleges' Engaging Students in the First Year Experience conference, to increase the impact, system-wide.
