Understanding and Overcoming Poverty in Wisconsin
Conference — August 6-7, 2009

This WIPPS- sponsored event was held at the Westwood Conference Center in Wausau, Wisconsin and drew over 200 participants from throughout the state. Keynotes were delivered by Congressman David Obey; UWC Chancellor David Wilson; Tim Smeeding, Director of the Institute for Research on Poverty; and John Hoffmire, Director of the Center on Business and Poverty at the UW-Madison Business School. The conference showcased a report update from the Governor's Office's Building Bridges to Family Economic Success summit held May 4-5, 2009 and served as a link to the upcoming 28th annual Poverty Matters! Conference in November 2009. Conference tracks included: Health and Nutrition, Education, Housing, the Unbanked/Underbanked, and Community Approaches to Ending Poverty (which featured voices of poverty). It concluded with a plenary session that enabled the Governor's summit workgroups to strategize and implement next steps that were intended to lead to a plan detailing a set of shared strategies and mechanisms for achieving outcomes that advance Wisconsin families.
