Dr. James M. McCluskey, UWMC professor of geography, in collaboration with WIPPS, uses data from the Public Land Survey System to conduct a study in the Town of Wausau (published in Directions Magazine).
The Town Board of the Town of Wausau in Central Wisconsin (population 2,229) wanted to survey residents on the need for specific services, the willingness of community members to pay for specific services, and other key issues important to the community especially during an economic downturn. The town board contracted with the Wisconsin Institute of Public Policy and Service in October 2010 to formulate survey questions, compile results, incorporate the survey results within a GIS, and complete a final report. The town realized a significant savings by partnering with WIPPS to complete the project and was successful in displaying the results on a map, thanks to the methodologies employed in the survey process, in sustaining the anonymity of the respondents.
